Do you know which cloud vendor is right for you? When you register for IC3, for example, you must pick a vendor for technical training:
- Amazon Web Services Essentials
- Introduction to Azure
- Google Cloud Platform Fundamentals
Picking a vendor may be harder than it sounds. For many enterprise customers cloud computing is still a new concept. New users often have no idea where to start. The perceived simplicity and low cost of cloud computing doesn’t help. Easy access and credit card payments lull customers into believing that vendor selection is inconsequential. But recent studies by Gartner and other analysts indicate that issues such as training, familiarity with the platform and even a concept called “data gravity” make it hard to switch vendors.
FierceCIO published an article by IC3 sponsor Ryan Lee, COO of CBT Nuggets, about how to pick a cloud vendor to get started on your first enterprise project. Vendor lock-in may be a think of the past but Ryan calls out the Gartner and IDC studies that indicate switching costs and even increased networking costs for a multi-cloud environment.
That said, cloud offers tremendous economies of scale over on-premise or traditional data center solutions. See Ryan’s article to help you choose a project and a provider to run your first cloud project. Better yet, meet the vendors in person Nov 9-10. You know where!
